Heading HOME!

I’ll be going home today! I woke up to this encouraging note from my doctor. ☺️

Overall this has been a very positive experience. Great care. I can’t say enough about my surgical team. Experienced. Compassionate. Communicative. Kind. Team oriented. Everything you want when undertaking complicated procedures.

Now I’m looking forward to rest. And Mail. And eventually visitors. I need to figure out my new normal first.

Thank you to everyone for your support  I’m so grateful for my village! 🥰🧠❣️

Day Three!

My recovery is exceeding all expectations!

When I left the ICU I walked the entire length to my room which was considerable. I've been eating healthy, walking every day several times, and resting.

My mom and Barley have settled in.

My surgeon and his team are incredible. If you're planning to have Brain surgery, you want my doc!

Everyone is getting good care. I expect to be going home tomorrow. Still a little shaky on my feet so being cautious. Plus they saved my hair!

Thanks for all the support village! I couldn't have done this without you all!

 FEBRUARY 25 UPDATE:

Surgery went really well as did the first night.  Ingrid is both talkative and engaged, keeping the doctors nursing staff amused and on their toes.

She is expected to remain at the hospital for 3-5 days in total, first in the ICU and then on a step-down unit.  If you want to come visit, short visits are welcome but she gets tired.  Will let you know when first visits can happen.

Surgery Update Process & Info

I have been asked to provide details about the day of surgery which is Monday February 24th.

  • 5:45 am - check in 😑
  • 7 am - surgery start*
  • 3pm to 5 pm - surgery finish (my friend Kirsten will update this page for those wanting up to date news)
  • I will be in the recovery room for a while, then transferred to the ICU unit on the first night.
  • For days 2, 3 and 4 I will be transferred to a regular hospital room. (Come visit!)
  • I expect to be released on Thursday February 28th at or around 11 am.

Home to recover until my next doctor appointment on March 10th at 10 am. I cannot drive to this appointment and will need a ride there and back. I expect this appointment to last 2 hours with drive time. If you want to celebrate my staple removal, let me know. By celebrate I mean hang out and get me to and from. 😉 Thanks to Donna for offering to celebrate with me!

* For those interested in the technical aspect of my procedure, I am having an Acoustic Neuroma Resection with a Suboccipital Approach with Auditory Brainstem Response Test to monitor my cranial nerves 8 and 9. These nerves control hearing in my left ear and facial muscles on the left side of my face. They are being very careful to not damage these are I may loose hearing or fascial muscle control.

Snail... mail!

I've had penpals my entire life. There is nothing more that I love than finding a hand written piece of mail in my mail box!

Not your thing? How about a postcard? That's simple. Just throwing this out in case you have an interest in sending me something.

2531 Meade Ct, Ann Arbor Mi 48105

I can't wait to open my mailbox!

Ways to Support my Mom!

While I am in recovery, my mom will be taking a mini vacation at Vibrant Senior Living. She will be there from Sunday February 23rd through Tuesday March 11th.

To help her pass the time, she would appreciate company. You can stop by for a visit, or pick her up and go for a meal. There are no restrictions about coming and going.

Vibrant Living is at the corner of Prospect and Geddes in Ypsilanti at 8100 Geddes. She's in building 4 that is to the east of the red marker shown below.

Simply park in front of the building (shown below), enter and ask for her in room 404. If you would like to call first, hear is the number you can reach her at (734) 484-4740. Press 9. You'll be connected to her building and ask for her.

I will add she is not thrilled about being here and may ask to go home. I am providing a calendar in her room so she can count down the days until she can return home. I'm expecting that to be on Wednesday March 12th, but is dependent on how quickly I recover and can resume her full time care.

Thanks for thinking of my mom at this time, too!

DROPPING OFF A MEAL?

I will be healing for a few weeks after my surgery and would appreciate meal deliveries. If you're interested in helping there are a couple of options.

For a refrigerated snack or meal, I will have a blue and white cooler on my front porch that items can be placed in for a quick delivery. Please text or call that you have dropped something off so I can retrieve it. (734) 274-3350

For warm items, call or text before coming please. I will meet you at the door.

Or for my favorite, a whole milk latte, feel free to deliver at any time! If you have time for a visit all the better!

Here is the calendar to see how you can help. Thank you for considering!

Meal ideas?

I prefer vegetarian dishes.

Hot food - I love soups, chili, casseroles, pasta, fish (perch, white fish, cod, fish and chips, fish sandwiches - no tarter), Chinese, Thai, Indian.

  • Thai - Tuptim (4896 Washtenaw Ave. Ypsilanti 48197). Tuptim Fried Rice, Tofu, Medium spice. Thai iced tea with cream.
  • Or No Thai! (1745 Plymouth Rd. Ann Arbor 48105). Pad Basil, Tofu, medium spice. Thai Iced Tea with cream.
  • Indian - Cardamom (1739 Plymouth Rd. Ann Arbor 48105). Vegetable Korma, Medium spice. Plain Nan.
  • Chinese - I don't know where to get good Chinese but if you have a favorite I like cashew chicken (one of the times I eat meat).
  • Cottage Inn Pizza (2715 Plymouth Rd. Ann Arbor 48105). Pineapple, banana peppers and extra cheese.
  • Anthony's Pizza (1508 Maple or 1924 Packard St.) Small stuffed Chicago with roasted red peppers, onions and raw garlic. Delicious but expensive.
  • Pizza Bob's (800 S State St Ann Arbor, MI 48104). Whole wheat chapati no mushrooms. Small caramel hot fudge shake
Cold foods
  • Salads! (Spinach and Romain are great! with egg, dried cranberries/cherried, beets, colorful peppers, red onions, balsamic vinaigrette),
  • cottage cheese and peaches or pineapple,
  • creamy Cole slaw,
  • Panera tuna salad sandwich on Tomato Basil Bread side of chips,
  • Quiche and Frittata's! (Deliver cold and I can warm it up!)

Snacks - Wheat Thins - Hint of Salt, Detroit 313 Tortilla Chips (regular) or Ann Arbor Tortilla Factory (regular) chips.

Sweets - Zingerman's currant scone, cinnamon roll, Buttermilk cake. Panera cranberry oatmeal cookie, vanilla ice cream sandwiches.

Beverages - Kombucha any flavor and brand (Kevita Cherry is my favorite), Whole milk latte, orange pop, strawberry shakes unless it's from Pizza Bob's (see above).

Things I do not like (or don't like me) - greek salads, olives, mushrooms, strong cheese, (gives me a headache which I certainly don't need right now), seeds, liver, mussels, clams, oysters.

How did I get where I am?

Unfortunately, in December I received a concerning diagnosis. I have had a benign brain tumor for a while now and it has presented symptoms that is resulting in my having brain surgery on February 24th. My recovery will be between 6 to 8 weeks but I’m planning to take the full two months to recover. I mean...brain surgery!

The surgery will take 8 to 10 hours which is a little frightening. The good news is I have one of the best surgeons who has done thousands of these before. Plus, I’ve become so adept at navigating the medical world. My friend will be there for the surgery and my cousin is coming to take care of me for several days after. I’ll probably be in the hospital for three days and then home for two weeks before I have the staples removed. Youza! ...staples in my brain?

Barley will have a short vacation visiting the Rose a founder of the rescue agency I got him from. (A huge thank you to Rose! Go donate to Keller's Cause that rescue blind, deaf, or both dogs.) As I’m not allowed to lift more than 10 pounds (4.5 kilograms) or even blow my nose (!), Barley will visit his old friends for a while.

As for my mom, she can’t monitor her medications, cook, or do basic household chores so we are moving her to respite care for at least two weeks. She will be at Vibrant Senior Living in her own apartment. It’s expensive but I cannot be worried about caring for those that rely on me right now.

My focus needs to be on my recovery. More good news is that I have short term disability insurance so I’ll have 60% of my pay and can take the time off my job that will be there when I return.

There is also a chance that I may lose hearing or facial muscle control on the left side of my head. The surgery will ‘debulk” the tumor rather than remove all of it. It is shaped like a dumbbell that wraps around my auditory and facial cranial nerves. Removing it is too dangerous but making it smaller will preserve my vision, hearing and balance (that has also been affected.) The goal is to set me up for the future so that as it grows (which it has and probably will continue to do) I will be a good candidate for radiation which is much less invasive and safer. Doing this now while I’m younger is also safer.

To top this all off, I had two crowns in January! It seems as if my whole head is falling apart. Fortunately, as you can see my sense of humor is intact. Join me in my journey to learn more about what is happening and how you can help in small and bigger ways.

Thanks for being a part of my village!
